Renfe has calculated that it generates savings of 305 million euros for society through the development of its activity, after evaluating in economic terms the impact on climate change, pollution and the accident rate that carrying out the same transport by other means, such as the plane, the truck or the car.

The daily circulation of all its trains prevents the emission of 5.7 million tons of CO2 per year and represents a saving of 1.1 million tons of oil equivalent, which has direct repercussions not only in the fight against climate change but also in public health, as defended by the public company.

As an example, it has been estimated that with these savings the shopping basket of more than three million people could be filled for a full month, 136,500 jobs could be generated for a month, 293,625 pensions or 35.9 million people could be paid they could subscribe for a month to one of the main digital entertainment platforms, such as Netflix or HBO.

The savings in CO2 emissions by Renfe is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by 34.1 million trees or the CO2 absorbed by a forest of 26,255 hectares, an area equivalent to the Teide National Park.

Its Master Plan to Fight Climate Change, valid from 2018-2030 and carried out together with Adif, aims to achieve zero emissions by 2050. Currently, 80% of the energy consumed by Renfe is clean electricity from emission, since it comes from renewable sources with certificates of origin.

The other 20% refers to diesel traffic, but the company is working on innovation projects to replace diesel with other renewable sources, such as green hydrogen, biogas or second and third generation biofuels.

In Renfe Mercancías, which transported 15.3 million tons per kilometer in 2021, the average unit emission was 8.30 grams of CO2 per tonne in each kilometer, an amount 10 times lower than road freight transport.
