Real Madrid and its idyll with shadows with the European Super Cup

MADRID, 9 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Real Madrid disputes this Wednesday (9:00 p.m.) the European Super Cup, due to its status as current champion of the Champions League, against Eintracht, current winner of the Europa League, for which the merengue team will seek to become super champion of the continent, something that he has already achieved four times, although he has not lifted the trophy since 2017.

But, how has the Madrid team's journey been in this tournament? How many Super Cup finals have you played? How many have you won and how many have you lost?

1998. Real Madrid-Chelsea. Victory for the English.

The white team raised the 'Seventh' in 1998 and managed to reconcile with the 'Champions' 32 years after their last title. This allowed the meringues to play the European Super Cup on August 28 of that same year, against Chelsea, champion that season of the European Cup Winners' Cup. But Real Madrid led by Illgner, Roberto Carlos, Hierro, Seedorf, Redondo, Mijatovic, Raúl and company was defeated by the Londoners (0-1), with a goal by Gustavo Poyet.

2000. Real Madrid - Galatasaray. The second time was not the charm.

Real Madrid had a new opportunity to become European Super Champion for the first time in its history, but it wasn't the charm the second time either. Galatasaray, who beat Arsenal in the UEFA Cup final that season, also beat the Merengue team (1-2) thanks to two goals from Mário Jardel. The madridistas, led by Del Bosque and with Figo, Guti, Raúl and Makélélé on the pitch, once again saw their wish truncated by a goal in extra time from the Turks.

2002. Real Madrid - Feyenoord. The third time is the charm.

Real Madrid had to wait until 2002 to lift their first European Super Cup, after becoming European champions for the ninth time that season in the historic final in Glasgow thanks to Zidane's volley goal. The Whites beat Dutch Feyenoord (3-1) with goals from Roberto Carlos, Guti and Paauwe, own goals.

2014. Real Madrid - Seville. Ancelotti lifts his first Super Cup.

After achieving the long-awaited tenth European Cup in 2014, Real Madrid returned to dispute the European Super Cup 12 years later. Cristiano Ronaldo decided the match against Sevilla with a brace to make it 2-0 definitively, in a match that bordered on perfection for Ancelotti's men, who lifted their first title as super champion on the continent. Kroos made his debut in the match, still key in Madrid and for Anceleotti in his second spell on the bench.

2016. Real Madrid - Seville. Epic to raise the trophy again.

The white team had just won the final of the 'Champions' against Atlético de Madrid in Milan in a match that was very evenly matched and in the European Super Cup the script was very similar. Sevilla turned around Marco Asensio's early goal, who hit a sensational shot, with two goals from Franco Vázquez and Konoplyanka. However, the people from Seville did not have the epic madridista characteristic, and Sergio Ramos forced the game to go into extra time with a header in the small area. From then on, white dominance culminated in 119' Carvajal to make it 3-2.

2017. Real Madrid - Manchester United. Second in a row.

The winner of the three consecutive 'Champions' did the same in the European Super Cup, and in 2018 he revalidated the title of super champion of the continent. On this occasion the victim was Mourinho's United, which Zidane's pupils defeated with goals from Casemiro and Isco. It was the fifth final played by the Whites under the baton of the French coach, who until then continued without fail in the key moments and added a new trophy to the White showcases.

2018. Real Madrid - Atletico. Last precedent with a bad taste in the mouth.

The Madrid team was facing the 'post-Zidane' and 'post-Cristiano Ronaldo' era, now with Julen Lopetegui on the bench and without a clear reference point. Perhaps the whites paid for this and in the European Super Cup, this time against Atlético, the rojiblancos took revenge for the two lost European finals, winning (2-4) in a duel that needed extra time. Real Madrid was always behind on the scoreboard and the goals from Benzema and Ramos did not surpass the double from Costa and the goals from Koke and Saúl in extra time.
