Putin Appoints New Emergencies Minister Eight Months After Accidental Death of His Predecessor

MADRID, 23 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Alexander Kurenkov as the new Emergencies Minister on Monday eight months after the post was vacated following the death of former minister Yevgeni Zinichev in a helicopter accident.

The president has presented the candidacy before the Council of the Federation, the Russian Senate, which must confirm the appointment.

Russian senator Andrei Klishas, for his part, has confirmed in a Telegram message the presentation of Kurenkov's candidacy and has indicated that it will be "examined".

Zinichev died after falling off a cliff during the recording of a documentary directed by film director Alexander Melnik, who also lost his life.

Zinichev was 55 years old, had held the position of Minister of Emergencies since May 2018 and had held the military rank of General of the Army since December 2020. Putin posthumously awarded Zinichev with the Hero of the Russian Federation medal for "the heroism, bravery and courage displayed in the act of service".
