Police expel a group of Jews on the Esplanade of the Mosques after an exhibition of Israeli flags

MADRID, 29 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Israeli Police has expelled a group of Jews from the Esplanade of the Mosques (or Temple Mount) for violating the regulations on attendance at this sacred place in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The UN special coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, had called for "maximum containment" to avoid a violent escalation coinciding with the celebration this Sunday of Jerusalem Day with flag marches called by Israeli activists.

The Israeli authorities have announced that they will allow the march of thousands of Israeli extremists through Palestinian neighborhoods in Jerusalem despite calls to modify this route to avoid a response from the Palestinian population.

Regarding what happened this Sunday, the Police have not given exact figures of expelled or the reason, but the eviction has occurred, according to the 'Times of Israel', after several Jewish religious nationalists waved Israeli flags on the Temple Mount.

Police have also reported the arrest of several Palestinians who have been involved in skirmishes with security forces as tensions rise ahead of the Jerusalem Day procession.

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas had warned this week that the appearance of any Israeli flag in this place could trigger a violent response.

"If the defenders of Al Aqsa (Jerusalem) do not destroy these flags with their feet, we will do so with rockets," spokesman Mushir al-Masri warned.
