Poland breaks the agreement with Russia on the use of the Yamal gas pipeline

MADRID, 23 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of Poland has announced the rupture of the agreement signed almost three decades ago with Russia for the use of the Yamal gas pipeline, which supplies gas to Europe, in a new chapter of political and energy tensions between the two neighboring countries on account of the offensive Russian military in Ukraine.

The Environment Minister, Anna Moskwa, has announced on her Twitter account the annulment of an agreement signed in 1993, for the sake of the need to become completely independent of Russian gas after the "aggression" on Ukraine.

"We always knew that Gazprom was not a reliable partner," Moskwa said, referring to the Russian energy giant that now forces its customers from "hostile" countries to pay for supplies in rubles by direct order of President Vladimir Putin.

The refusal of several customers to abide by these new conditions has already resulted in the cut off of supply to countries such as Poland, Bulgaria and Finland. Moscow estimates that about half of its 54 international clients have agreed to pay in rubles.
