Podemos distances itself from the "medieval" swearing-in of Princess Leonor and encourages the PSOE to open the debate on the Republic

He summons Felipe VI to stand for elections to see if he is a "different option" to the king emeritus and his "corrupt"

MADRID, 4 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Podemos stands out from the oath of the Constitution that Princess Leonor will have to take when she comes of age in 2023, a ceremony that she compares to "medieval oaths", and has insisted on the need to open the debate of the Republic so that the Head of State can be elected democratically.

According to the minority partner of the coalition government, this debate should be opened "sooner rather than later" and in this scenario, Felipe VI or his heiress is summoned to stand for election.

This was indicated during an interview with Europa Press by the secretary of Institutional Action and co-spokesperson for Podemos, María Teresa Pérez, who is convinced that the "republican horizon" is "closer than ever".

Questioned about whether there will be time in this legislature to celebrate this swearing of fidelity to the Constitution that marks the Magna Carta itself before the General Courts are dissolved in 2023, given that the Princess reaches the age of majority in October, Pérez has said that "more than medieval oaths", what they hope is that "one day the Head of State can be elected.

"And that day Leonor will have every right to stand for election and be the head of state if the citizens choose her," Pérez riveted, later adding that Podemos is a republican formation that conceives the monarchy as an "anachronistic institution" that "it should not interfere in political times and affairs".

Regarding the situation of the monarchy after two years have elapsed since King Emeritus Juan Carlos I left the country, the leader of the purple formation has launched that Felipe VI should also stand for election, so that citizens can assess whether it is a "different option" to his father and "finally forgive all those corruptions" that "have discredited Spain".

"We think that sooner rather than later we should open that debate as a country and ask ourselves if we really want to have a totally anachronistic institution as national representation, and I would also say not very useful," emphasized the director of Injuve.

Regarding whether the heiress to the throne should also do military service like the current monarch, Pérez has pointed out that this activity "is no longer compulsory in Spain" and the Princess herself "should not only represent something new", but really "demonstrate that wants to take another step in deepening democracy by running for elections".

And it is clear that the vision of society, especially in its youth, is linked to republican values that are "radically democratic, feminist and environmentalist", as seen in the 8M and in the climate demonstrations.

On the other hand, he has defended that it is time to address the reform of the crime of sedition to advance in the dejudicialization of the conflict in Catalonia and, unlike what was expressed by the PSOE and the president himself, he has claimed that if dialogue is possible build a parliamentary majority to approve it. With that will, he has predicted that "yes they will give the numbers."

He has also reiterated that his position on Catalonia is clear and they would always "support a referendum", but always insisting on the need for dialogue and reaching consensus, in the face of a judicialization of politics that has caused "tremendous damage".
