Aitor Esteban defends that with the reform "the conducts are not decriminalized" but rather "one and the other are qualified"

BILBAO, 12 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The PNV spokesman in Congress, Aitor Esteban, has assured that his formation will support the reform of the crime of embezzlement if what is sought is to return to the point prior to the 2015 reform carried out by the PP. "In principle it sounds good to us," he added.

In an interview on Radio Euskadi, collected by Europa Press, the jeltzale representative has analyzed the proposal to reform the crime of embezzlement promoted by PSOE and Unidas Podemos, which will be presented this Monday, and which would propose a reduction in penalties.

In this sense, Esteban has considered that what will surely be given this Monday is a transactional amendment and has recognized that the PNV, "in principle", "sounds good" because what is being proposed is "to return to the point of the Penal Code that modified the PP with its absolute majority in 2015".

"He did it thinking of punishing that consultation carried out by President Artur Mas and that our group voted against because we thought that criminally it was not the right move," he recalled.

For this reason, he has recognized that if what is sought now is to "return to that previous point", the PNV thinks it is "correct" and would give it its support. "If it is in those terms we are in favor", he has expressed it.

Regarding the PP's criticism of the reform now proposed, Esteban has indicated that if the popular ones modified the Penal Code in 2015 it was because they wanted to do what they "later did with the Catalan referendum, go to punish and not talk about political problems".

In addition, he has maintained that with the reform "conducts are not decriminalized" but "one and the other are qualified" and has stressed that what occurs in Catalonia is "a political problem, it is not a criminal problem nor has there been a coup of State". "If the Catalans believe that this helps to return to terms of political dialogue, I think it is something to promote and support," he concluded.
