The Government of Peru announced this Friday the declaration of a state of emergency for 60 days in the districts of Caravelí and Atico, in the department of Arequipa, in the south of the country, after 14 deaths were recorded last week and the disappearance of three people.

During the emergency period, the Peruvian National Police will maintain control of internal order with the support of the Peruvian Armed Forces, and the constitutional rights related to freedom of movement and freedom of assembly will also be suspended, as reported by the Peruvian Executive. in a statement to which the Andina agency has had access.

The local authorities have positively valued the measure taken by the Government of Peru, since in response to the deaths, the families and companions of the victims had imposed a blockade on the bridge of the Pan-American highway, which passes through the district of Atico .

"It is going to allow us to breathe calmly. I think the Government has taken a very important step since it had been delayed. Hopefully the visit of more police officers will take place as soon as possible," said the mayor of the Atico district, Milton Medina, assuring that the measure will bring "peace" to his jurisdiction.
