One in two Argentines claims to have suffered some type of gender-based violence

MADRID, 30 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Almost half of Argentine women have gone through or are going through situations of gender violence, either by their current or former partners, according to a survey presented by the Argentine Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity.

The data collected indicates that 45 percent of women who are or have been in a relationship have experienced some type of domestic violence. Of the total, psychological violence was the most common (42 percent), although in general two or more types of violence are combined, according to the Télam agency.

64 percent of women claim to have experienced some type of episode of domestic violence by a former partner throughout their lives, and 17 percent have confessed to having experienced situations of sexual abuse committed by men with or without a relationship family.

Another axis revealed by the survey is related to the effects that violence has on the health and well-being of women. Specifically, depression, anguish and other types of fears are the most common responses.

Among the most alarming impacts, almost 30 percent of those who have experienced situations of violence by a former partner, and 10 percent of those who were violated by a current partner, have reported a lack of desire to continue living.

The data also shows that 41.5 percent of those who have experienced situations of violence by their partners or ex-partners have turned to people they know. A figure that increases to 60 percent in the case of women physically violated.

This implies that 40 percent of the interviewees live their situation alone without any type of support and containment from their environment. In addition, only 21 percent of the total have decided at some point to file a complaint, according to the aforementioned agency.

To carry out the study, more than 12,000 women between the ages of 18 and 65 have been interviewed from 25 urban agglomerations of Buenos Aires, Chaco, Chubut, Entre Ríos, Jujuy, Neuquén, Misiones, Salta, San Luis, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero and Tucuman.
