OECD unemployment picks up one tenth in August, up to 4.9%

The unemployment rate of the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) rose one tenth in the month of August, reaching 4.9%, although it still remains close to the historical minimum of 4, 8% that registered the previous month, as reported by the agency on Monday.

In this way, the OECD has indicated that the unemployment rate in the eighth month of the year was equal to or lower in 80% of the countries that make up the multilateral entity.

The number of unemployed in the block of countries reached 33.192 million people in August, which represents an increase of 371,000 unemployed compared to the previous month.

Among the OECD countries, the highest unemployment rates were observed in Spain, with 12.3%; Greece, with 12.2%; and Costa Rica, with 11.8% in July. By contrast, the lowest levels of unemployment were in the Czech Republic, at 2.4%; Japan and South Korea, with 2.5%; and Poland, with 2.6%.

In August, unemployment among those under 25 years of age rose by three tenths, reaching 10.6%. The highest unemployment rates among young people corresponded to Greece, with 28.6%; Spain, with 26.6%; and Italy, with 21.2%.

By contrast, the lowest levels of youth unemployment were in Japan (3.9%), Germany (5.7%) and South Korea (6.2%).
