OECD forecasts record immigration to Germany over Ukraine war

BERLIN/PARIS, Oct. 11 (DPA/EP) -

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has reported that it expects the number of migrants arriving by the end of the year to be higher than in 2015, when more than 2.1 million people arrived in Germany in one year, mainly as a result of the civil war in Syria.

With these data, the organization hopes that the war in Ukraine will cause the largest migratory movement to Germany since reunification, according to DPA.

The latest OECD report on migration thus speaks of a historic mass exodus as a result of the Russian invasion.

The Federal Statistical Office has recorded more than 1.8 million arrivals in the country between February and August this year. Among them, some 952,000 Ukrainians who have fled the war in Ukraine.

Around 5 million people have fled from Ukraine to OECD countries in mid-September alone. With almost half a million refugees, Germany is the second country on the list of recipients, only behind Poland.
