Norway commemorates victims of shooting attack on LGBTI pub

MADRID, June 26. (EUROPA PRES) -

Oslo Cathedral has been the scene of a memorial service for the victims of the shooting attack against an LGBTI pub last Saturday that left at least two dead and 21 injured, investigated by the authorities as a terrorist attack.

"We are gathered here in pain, desperation and helplessness," Deacon Anne-May Grassass said during the mass, condemning the attack as an assault on the diversity the country had long fought for.

Norway's Crown Princess Princess Mette-Marit and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store were among those at the memorial service. Crown Prince Haakon had to cancel due to coronavirus infection.

Store called on the population to speak out against hate and continue to defend a diverse society. He also addressed the Muslim population directly, emphasizing that they were part of Norwegian society and that he knew many would be shocked to learn of the alleged motive of the perpetrator.

"This has shocked our entire society," said Church Council of Norway leader Kristin Gunleiksrud Raaum, according to broadcaster NRK. "Those of us who are 'queer' must now receive solidarity and support from everyone else," she added.

The London Pub nightclub, the main target of the attacks, has been a popular hangout for the LGBTI community in Oslo since 1979. On its website, the club is described as having a "completely unique atmosphere. Here everyone can be themselves and be accepted for it.

Many were there Friday night and early Saturday, ahead of a big Pride parade planned for Saturday after being canceled for the past two years due to the pandemic. The Oslo Pride parade was canceled again on Saturday morning in light of the attacks and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Police had previously reported that the suspect, who was detained, is a Norwegian citizen of Iranian origin.
