Marlaska calls for a "solid" anti-terrorist collaboration with the countries of the Middle East and North Africa

MADRID, 14 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, reaffirmed this Tuesday Spain's commitment to the efforts of the European Union to "create an environment of trust and mutual support" and of "solid collaboration" with the countries of the Middle East and the North Africa (MENA region, in its an acronym in English) to fight terrorism, radicalized violent extremism and organized crime.

As reported by Interior, Grande-Marlaska has participated electronically in the EU-MENA Ministerial Conference 'Strategic police alliance for the sake of cooperation based on trust', organized by the Ministry of Internal Administration of Portugal.

The conference was attended by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, as well as representatives of EUROPOL, CEPOL, FRONTEX and INTERPOL.

In his speech, the Spanish Minister of the Interior recalled that the MENA region is strategic because "regional and international threats from terrorism, organized crime and illicit trafficking have traditionally come together". "The terrorist threat in this region continues to be one of the great challenges in terms of security," he stressed.

Faced with these challenges, Grande-Marlaska has highlighted Spain's contribution to the fight against terrorism in that region with experiences such as the MENA CT Project, developed between 2017 and 2022 with the participation of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya , Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.

He also mentioned the ACT Project (Advance Counter Terrorism for Lebanon Security) deployed in Lebanon, which has managed to bring together in a single forum all the actors in that country involved in the fight against terrorism.

"Our commitment to these projects and many other initiatives is a clear sign of the firm conviction of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior that our mission to fight terrorism, violent extremism or radicalization rests on the pillars of a solid collaboration with our key partners", he pointed out, something that will be highlighted by the next Presidency of the Council of the EU.
