Mario Draghi announces his resignation as Prime Minister of Italy

Mario Draghi announced this Thursday his resignation as Prime Minister of Italy alleging that the trust pact that held the Executive together has been "broken" after the 5-Star Movement formation was absent this same day from the vote on a matter of trust presented in the Senate.

After this new disagreement within the Government, Draghi held a meeting with the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and later called a Council of Ministers, before which he announced that his resignation from office will be made official "this night," according to the Adnkronos news agency.

"Today's votes in Parliament are very significant from a political point of view. Most of the national unity that has supported this Government since its creation has left. The confidence pact that underlies the Government's action has failed", Draghi transferred.

The prime minister has valued his own commitment to "continue along the common path" and try to "meet the needs" that have been transferred to him from the different political forces, according to the newspaper 'Corriere della Sera'.

"Thank you for your work and for the many results obtained. We should be proud of what we have achieved, in a very difficult time, for the interest of all Italians", Draghi transferred.

Italy has plunged this Thursday into a new episode of its usual political crisis after the 5 Star Movement, a party that is part of the Executive, has been absent from the vote in the Senate on a matter of confidence in the Government itself.

The Senate has given the 'green light' to the question of confidence raised with which Draghi sought to speed up the process of processing an economic aid package against inflation, thus preventing Parliament from presenting amendments to the project.

From the 5 Star Movement they have defended that the absence of their members in the Upper House is due to discrepancies with the substance and form of the proposal, categorically distancing themselves from any attempt to generate a crisis in the Executive.

After this setback for governability, Draghi has postponed a Council of Ministers scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and has moved to the Quirinale Palace, official residence of President Mattarella, with whom he has held a conversation for around an hour.
