Mari Mar Blanco asks the mayor of Ermua to be able to intervene in the tribute to her brother 25 years after his murder

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Mari Mar Blanco, president of the Miguel Ángel Blanco Foundation and sister of the former PP councilor assassinated by ETA in 1997, has requested by letter the mayor of Ermua, the socialist Juan Carlos Abascal, to allow her to intervene in the act that is going to take place. celebrate in this Biscayan town on July 10, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the murder of his brother at the hands of ETA.

"I inform you that I have decided to send a copy of this letter to the Presidency of the Government of Spain and the Basque Government, so that they can expressly support this simple request. I just want to speak in tribute to my brother and in his memory," he says. Mari Mar Blanco in the letter, to which Europa Press has had access.

The King, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, will preside over this institutional act in Ermua this Sunday for the 25th anniversary of the kidnapping and murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco. This crime shocked Spanish society and prompted the 'Ermua Spirit' civic movement, with white hands raised as a feeling of massive rejection of terrorism.

In her letter, Mari Mar Blanco formally addresses the councilor of Ermua to ask him to speak at Sunday's ceremony and reminds him that these years "he had never had to chase loudspeakers of any kind" because the party in which his brother militated and the Spanish society itself has offered them "with generous frequency".

However, in an event as important as this year's, he believes it is "justified and necessary" to be able to address the audience on behalf of his family and the Miguel Ángel Blanco Foundation. For this reason, he assures that the explanations offered by the mayor about the fact that this year "the aim is to honor all the victims of ETA" are not "convincing" for him.

"What's more, no one has been offered to speak. In any case, no one can question that on Sunday the terrorist attack that took the life of Miguel Ángel Blanco will be remembered and that mobilized, like never before, the entire Spanish society giving rise to the 'spirit of Ermua' and, consequently, the refusal to allow me to express myself during the act, in freedom, and with the same respect with which we have always acted as his family since he was killed, is incomprehensible", add in the letter.

Mari Mar Blanco tells the mayor that she finds it "impossible to explain" why she will not be able to "deliver a brief speech on the 25th anniversary" of her brother's death, in the same town where he was murdered, "in the Pavilion that he dreamed of in his short time as councilor and that his man now carries".

"For this reason, I ask you, as the organizer of the event, to reconsider that decision," he affirms, adding that he has sent a copy of this letter to the Presidency of the Government of Spain and the Basque Government. "In the hope that you will attend to her, she receives a cordial greeting", concludes Mari Mar Blanco in the aforementioned letter, which has been collected by Europa Press.
