Álvaro García advocates "redefining" the powers of the AN to specialize in drug trafficking and organized crime

MADRID, 28 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Álvaro García Ortiz, the government's candidate to head the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), advocated this Thursday for "redefining" the powers of the National Court (AN) with the aim of achieving greater specialization in drug trafficking and organized crime. Thus, he is committed to centralizing investigations and redoubling efforts in asset recovery.

"The Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office, both in the National High Court and in the territorial delegations, must be supported and reinforced," García Ortiz said before the Justice Commission of the Congress of Deputies, where he has appeared to defend his suitability to be the new prosecutor General replacing Dolores Delgado.

The aspiring to lead the Public Ministry believes that the time has come to "redefine the powers" of the AN "to turn it into an even more specialized judicial institution not only in the repression and persecution of terrorism, but also in organized crime of all type, national and transnational and, in particular, all "criminal" activities organized and dedicated to the illicit trafficking of persons in different modalities".

A reinforcement is necessary, García Ortiz has pointed out, to avoid the "collapse" of the procedures, a circumstance - he has emphasized - of which drug traffickers "take advantage".
