Lula warns that "Bolsonaroism will continue to exist" even if Bolsonaro loses the Brazilian elections

MADRID, 28 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The candidate for the Brazilian Presidency Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party, PT) has stated that in the event of an eventual defeat of President Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party, PL), "Bolsonarism" will continue to exist in Brazil.

The former president has recalled "the strength of Malufism", referring to the twice-elected mayor of Sao Paulo Paulo Maluf, assuring that Bolsonaro's legacy could continue to exist even if he ceases to be president, according to 'Folha de S.Paulo' '.

"When we thought that Malufismo had ended, Malufismo did not end, because Maluf was very strong. And this will serve as a lesson for us. We will defeat Bolsonaro, but Bolsonaro will continue to exist," Lula said during an act of his party.

"And you have to defeat them. Defeat them in the political debate, in the healthy discussion so that society cannot understand that the country can have people of their ilk governing this country or doing politics," continued the PT leader, according to what he has collected the aforementioned newspaper.

However, the presidential candidate has announced that he will not stand for re-election, stating that he does not believe that a citizen over 80 aspires to lead the country.

"I said something that is politically imprudent, but everyone knows that I have four years to do it. Everyone knows that it is not possible for an 81-year-old citizen to want re-election (...). Nature is implacable," said Lula, as reported by 'O Globo'.

The former president will turn 77 on October 27 and, if elected, will be 81 at the end of his term in 2026. Given this reality, Lula intends to keep all his promises during this legislature.
