Liz Truss cancels a BBC interview saying she can't waste time

LONDON, 30 Aug. (DPA/MADRID) -

The candidate to lead the British Conservative Party and to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, has canceled an interview with the BBC on Monday, alleging that she could not waste time on her campaign.

This has been announced by the BBC itself in a statement detailing that Truss has communicated her decision to attend the interview scheduled for Tuesday night with political journalist Nick Robinson on BBC One.

"Liz Truss has canceled her BBC One interview with Nick Robinson, which was due to air this Tuesday night (August 30) at 7pm. Mrs Truss's team say she no longer has time to appear on 'Our Next Prime Minister'", the British network said in a message on Twitter.

However, the BBC has recalled that the other candidate for the conservative leadership, Rishi Sunak, was interviewed by Nick on August 10.

"We regret that it was not possible to carry out an in-depth interview with both candidates despite having reached an agreement for it," added the UK broadcaster.

A source from the Truss campaign has maintained that he is not going to participate because he is focused on winning "the largest number of votes possible and on preparations for the Government," according to the DPA agency.

Following the BBC statement, the UK foreign secretary has faced accusations of dodging scrutiny of voters by her rival and Labor.

A Sunak team source said it has highlighted the importance of candidates facing adequate scrutiny so that members and the public know what they offer.

"Avoiding that scrutiny suggests that either Truss has no plan, or one that does fall far short of the challenges we face this winter," he added.

Conor McGinn, Labor minister without portfolio, has assured that British citizens "cannot comment on the election of the next 'tory' prime minister", and has pointed out that "it seems that Truss wants to avoid any type of public scrutiny".

"People will rightly conclude that they don't want to answer questions about their plans for the country because they simply don't have any serious answers to the big challenges facing our country. Only Labor can provide the new start." that the country needs," he added.
