Lithuania urges the EU to avoid "concessions" to Russia regarding transit to Kaliningrad

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis urged the European Union on Tuesday to avoid making "concessions" to Russia in relation to transit to Kaliningrad after blocking the passage of goods through its territory and to the Russian exclave. .

"Russia cannot demand a revision of any sanctions and any kind of concession on this should be avoided, and I believe that the European Council thinks the same. Russia cannot obtain a diplomatic victory in a matter related to sanctions," he said.

The issue has caused an increase in tension in the region after Russian authorities accused the United States of being behind the Lithuanian blockade of such transit.

According to the Lithuanian minister, the European Council is still "developing a document on how sanctions against Russia should be implemented," according to information collected by the LRT radio station.

"The biggest problem is to see if these ideas become a legal document, something that could create more problems. (...) I am afraid that this will be seen as a sign of weakness," he said before clarifying that Russia he could understand "any hesitation" from the West as a "victory for his diplomacy".
