Lithuania prohibits imports of Russian gas with the exception of the passage to Kaliningrad

MADRID, 29 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Lithuanian Parliament approved this Tuesday by 123 votes in favor, two abstentions and no votes against -- out of a total of 141 seats -- to ban imports of Russian natural gas, with the exception of those that go to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

Specifically, the rule vetoes access to suppliers from countries considered a "threat to national security" both to the gas pipeline network and to the Klaipeda liquefied natural gas terminal, according to the BNS news agency.

Already in March, the Klaipeda liquefied gas terminal stopped accepting shipments from the Russian company Novatek as a result of the sanctions imposed by the EU on the Russian oligarch Gennadi Timchenko.

And in April, pipeline imports were also closed to stop buying gas from Gazprom in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, Russian natural gas continues to flow through Lithuanian soil to supply Kaliningrad, although under a technical regime that limits transit to the volume necessary to supply the enclave.
