Lesmes urges the members of the CGPJ to agree on the two candidates of the TC for the plenary session on September 8

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and the Supreme Court (TS), Carlos Lesmes, announced this Thursday his intention to convene an extraordinary plenary session of the CGPJ for next September 8 and has urged the members to agree to then the name of the two candidates to the Constitutional Court (TC) that is responsible for appointing the governing body of the judges.

As reported by the CGPJ, Lesmes has informed the members in the plenary session held this Thursday that on September 8 he will convene an extraordinary one to debate the proposal for the appointment of magistrates of the Constitutional Court.

In addition, he has urged them to agree between now and then two candidates capable of gathering the minimum of 12 votes necessary for the General Council of the Judiciary to make its proposal.

Lesmes has taken this step after the General Courts have approved the reform of the Organic Law of the Judiciary (LOPJ) that returns to the CGPJ its ability to make discretionary appointments in the judicial leadership but only to designate its two candidates to the TC.

Said reform imposes on the members a maximum term, until September 13, to formulate their proposal to the court of guarantees. In recent statements, Lesmes undertook to convene a plenary session to give time, but stressed that the designation depends on at least 12 members agreeing, something that he -- he said -- he cannot guarantee.
