MADRID, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish courts and tribunals prosecuted 45 natural and legal persons for corruption crimes during the first quarter of 2022 compared to 72 prosecuted in the same period of 2021, as reported on Tuesday by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ).

In the first quarter of 2022, the Spanish judges concluded a total of nine procedures for corruption, in which an order was issued to open an oral trial or indictment against 45 people (one of them a legal person), who were or will be prosecuted for these types of crimes.

This is stated in the repository of data on procedures for corruption of the governing body of the judges after the incorporation of the information corresponding to the months of January, February and March of this year, which also includes the number of sentences handed down, which was 16.

The repository, which was presented on January 12, 2017, is publicly accessible on the website of the Judiciary and allows citizens to learn about the action of Justice in the global framework of the fight against corruption through its main indicators. -persons accused and/or prosecuted, procedures, sentences handed down, etc.-, which are updated on a quarterly basis.

From the CGPJ they have recalled that the information offered by the repository corresponds to the so-called public corruption, understanding that this is the one that causes the highest levels of concern among citizens.

In this way, the judicial procedures whose data are reflected in the repository have as active subjects public officials, governors and politicians in the exercise of their positions, and as one of the elements of the type the allocation of public money, thus covering both the administrative corruption and political corruption.

These phenomena are included in the Penal Code as crimes of urban prevarication, administrative prevarication, infidelity in the custody of documents and violation of secrets, bribery, influence peddling, embezzlement, fraud and illegal extortion, negotiations and activities prohibited to public officials and abuses in the exercise of their function and corruption in international commercial transactions.

During the analyzed quarter, the crimes investigated in a greater number of cases and with a greater number of people convicted were those of administrative prevarication, those of embezzlement and those committed against land use planning and against the environment.

According to the data revealed this Tuesday, the judicial body with the largest number of accused persons was the National High Court, which issued an order to open an oral or indictment trial against 13 people in a proceeding.

They are followed by the judicial bodies of Madrid, with 10 natural persons and one legal person accused; Catalonia, with 10 people; Extremadura, with five; Valencian Community, with four; and Andalusia, with an accused natural person.

The rest of the autonomous communities have registered zero accused of corruption crimes during the first quarter of 2022.

From the CGPJ they have also specified that between January 1 and March 31 of this year, the courts and tribunals handed down 16 sentences in procedures for corruption crimes compared to the 17 handed down in the same period of 2021.

In the first quarter of 2022, nine of the sentences were convictions and seven acquittals, which means that the ruling was guilty in 56 percent of the cases.

The information offered details whether the sentences have been acquittal or conviction and, within the latter, whether they have been acquitted or not, as well as whether they have been partially convicted (both because they have not been convicted of all the crimes for which accused or because not all of the accused have been sentenced).

Of the 16 resolutions, five were issued in Andalusia; three in Galicia; two in Asturias and the Valencian Community; and one in the Canary Islands, Castilla y León, Extremadura and Madrid.
