Judges for Democracy and the Progressive Union of Prosecutors demand that the death of migrants in Melilla be investigated

MADRID, 27 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Judges for Democracy (JJpD) and the Progressive Union of Prosecutors (UPF) have demanded that an investigation be carried out into the death of at least 23 people in the massive attempt by more than 2,000 sub-Saharans to cross the Melilla fence The last friday.

Both associations have spoken out through their Twitter accounts to condemn the deaths and demand that what happened in the autonomous city be clarified, which they have described as a human rights violation.

JJpD has insisted that "it is the responsibility of the public powers to guarantee the life and dignity of people above any other consideration". Thus, it has concluded that "it cannot be postponed and must be investigated by the competent authorities not only the facts, but especially also their causes."

From the judicial association they have stressed that said investigation is necessary "to avoid the repetition of an unacceptable situation of flagrant violation of the most basic Human Rights that cannot be justified in any consideration of convenience of any kind." In his opinion, it is necessary to "put an end to this type of situation that degrades the very essence and purpose" of Europe.

In line, JJpD has pointed out that these events, "once again", reveal "the brutal and inhuman reality faced by a growing number of people who are forced to leave their homes and leave behind lives and families , as a result of inequality and injustice in living conditions".

For the Progressive Union of Prosecutors, the facts are "the result of the outsourcing of border control financed with Spanish money." UPF has requested that an "investigation of what happened" be carried out, as well as the "cessation of the violation of Human Rights at the border" and "respect for the right of asylum".

Several NGOs that help migrants have already demanded an investigation of what happened from the Spanish and Moroccan authorities. In turn, they have demanded legal and safe ways for people who seek to migrate from their countries and reach Europe and have asked that those who did manage to cross the border in the autonomous city "not be returned".

At least 500 sub-Saharans managed to access Melilla last Friday after they managed to break the access door to the Chinatown border control post with shears, jumping from its roof to access the Spanish city. The massive entry left at least 49 Civil Guard agents slightly injured and 57 migrants.

Friday's is the first massive entry that has occurred in Melilla since the normalization of relations between Spain and Morocco in April 2022, after the change in position of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, on Western Sahara. It also coincided days before the NATO summit was held in Madrid on June 29 and 30, which is why security measures have been tightened.
