The Argentine coach trained the Seville team in the 2016/17 season

MADRID, 6 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Coach Jorge Sampaoli has become this Thursday the new coach of Sevilla FC, a team he was already with in the 2016/17 season, so he replaces Julen Lopetegui after being fired yesterday after his poor start to the season in LaLiga and the 'Champions'.

"Sevilla FC and Jorge Sampaoli have reached an agreement for the Argentine coach to become the new coach of the first team, thus completing his second stage in Nervión. Casilda's coach signs for the remainder of the season and one more, until June 30, 2024," the Seville club reported in a statement.

Along with the Argentine coach, Jorge Desio, Diogo Meschine and Pablo Fernández also arrive, who will form part of his coaching staff. Thus, this afternoon they will conduct their first work session in the sports city starting at 6:30 p.m.

In his first adventure for Seville, Sampaoli achieved in the first round of the season a historical record of points still in force with 42, leaving the 'red and white' team in fourth position with 72 points, which allowed them to dispute the Champions League again.

Already in the maximum continental competition he reached the round of 16, where he was eliminated against Leicester. After leaving Sevilla, his next challenge would be to direct the Argentina team, which he commanded in fifteen clashes between friendlies, the group stage of the Copa América and the 2018 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 against France.

From there he would go the next two seasons again to club management, in this case to Santos and the Brazilian Atlético Minero, with whom he finished in second and third position in Serie A, respectively, in the 2019 and 2020 courses.

The last two years, Sampaoli returned to Europe to train in Ligue 1 at Olympique de Marseille, where he was in charge of the French team from the end of 2020/21 and 2021/22, finishing in fifth and a more than outstanding second position last season, which allowed him access to the Champions League. In addition, last year he also reached the semifinals of the Conference League.

In his stage prior to his first arrival in Nervión, the coach also successfully trained the Chilean team, with which he won the Copa América, the first official title won by the national team. Precisely, his success earned him to be named the best coach in America in 2015, the year in which he was also nominated for the FIFA Ballon d'Or in the coach category.
