Johnson asks the 'Tories' to support "any candidate except Sunak" in the race to elect his successor

MADRID, 15 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked conservative deputies this Friday to support "any candidate except (Rishi) Sunak", a former finance minister, in the race to elect his successor a week after he submitted his resignation as leader of the 'tories'.

The 'premier' had previously indicated that "he would not support" any candidate to lead the Conservative Party nor would he intervene publicly in the debate. However, sources close to the newspaper 'The Times' have indicated that the president has opted for the Foreign Minister, Liz Truss, to be the new head of the Executive.

Thus, Johnson has had a series of conversations with several of the candidates in which he has made it clear that Sunak should not be the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, as these sources have pointed out.

In addition, the conservative politician would prefer the Secretary of State for Trade of the United Kingdom, Penny Mordaunt, before Sunak, who garnered the largest amount of support in the votes for the second time on Thursday to choose Johnson's successor.

The Conservative Party presented on Tuesday the definitive list with the eight names that choose to succeed Johnson, a process from which the candidates with the least support in successive votes will be left out until there are two contenders. The final result will be announced after the summer.
