JJpD urges the members of the CGPJ to resign like Lesmes to end the "illegality" of non-renewal

Ask that the 18 members stop holding a Council "captive" with interests other than Justice

MADRID, 10 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The association Judges and Judges for Democracy (JJpD) has asked all the members of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) to follow in the footsteps of its president, Carlos Lesmes, resign "immediately" and facilitate the renewal of the governing body of the judges, installed in an "unsustainable situation of illegality".

Hours after the president of the CGPJ and the Supreme Court announced that today he is going to present his resignation from the post, the JJpD secretariat has urged the members to do the same as Lesmes to "stop damaging the image and dignity of both justice as a public service, like that of a power that they do not represent and that they stopped serving too long ago".

In a note collected by Europa Press, the association of judges points out that Lesmes' resignation was the "only possible solution and decision" they expected. "There was and there is no other way out," they add, to remember that this request had already been made repeatedly.

JJpD, which says that it will not be understood that the 18 members hold a Council "captive" of interests alien to Justice, claims that the resignation of its president is the "occasion" to end "once and for all" with the "democratic abnormality" of a CGPJ that accumulates almost four years with its mandate expired.

"We therefore hope that the rest of the members of an institutional and democratic body, such as the CGPJ, resign immediately," he places, while stressing the role of the governing body of the judges as a guarantor of impartiality.

For JJpD, which describes the lack of renewal encouraged by "the actions of some members" as a "frontal attack" on the neutrality of the Judiciary, the members that make up the CGPJ have to stop being "accomplices" --as he referred to Lesmes himself when explaining yesterday the reasons for his departure-- from a "smear campaign" that is causing "damage" to the institutions.
