Japan executes the culprit of the murder of seven people in Tokyo in 2008

MADRID, 26 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Ministry of Justice of Japan has executed this Monday the culprit of the murder of seven people and injuring another ten in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, in June 2008.

Tomohiro Kato, 39, ran over three passers-by with a truck in the center of the Akihabara district in the Japanese capital and stabbed four other people, as reported by the Japanese chain NHK News.

Kato was charged with murder, among other charges, and has been executed by hanging at the Tokyo Detention Center, where he was being held.

"This is a terrible case not only for the victims who lost their lives due to a sudden attack, but also for the bereaved families. After enough trials, the death sentence has finally been finalized," said Japan's Justice Minister, Yoshihisa Furukawa, as collected by the aforementioned medium.

Kato was sentenced to death in 2011 and later in 2015 the case was closed with the rejection by the Supreme Court of Japan.

He has finally been executed in the second capital execution since Prime Minister Fumio Kishida took office in October 2021.

The United States and Japan are the only democratic countries that still carry out capital punishment. According to the Japanese Ministry of Justice, 106 prisoners are under sentence of death in detention centers across the country.

Kato posted messages of discontent with his life, his workplace and death threats on the Internet before committing the crime.
