Italian Matteo Berrettini misses Wimbledon after testing positive for coronavirus

The Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini will not be able to play the Wimbledon tournament, the third 'Grand Slam' of the season and of which he is the current runner-up, after testing positive for coronavirus this Tuesday a few hours before his debut against Christian Garín, just like himself He has announced on his social networks.

Berrettini joins Marin Cilic, who was left out of the Grand Slam earlier this week for the same reason. In both cases, they are tennis players who had the expectation of reaching the final rounds, and both were on the same side of the draw as the Spanish Rafa Nadal.

The Italian published a message on his social networks in which he announced that he will not compete and thanked his followers for their support. "I have no words to explain how disappointed I feel. The dream is over this year, but I will come back stronger," says Berrettini.

"I am heartbroken to announce that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon because I have tested positive for COVID-19. I have had flu symptoms and have been self-isolating for the past few days. Even though the symptoms were not serious, I decided it was important take another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my teammates and everyone around the tournament."

Matteo Berrettini was one of the names mentioned in this edition of Wimbledon, after reaching the final in 2021, where Novak Djokovic beat him. He was also in a great moment of form, having been proclaimed champion of the Queens tournament on June 19.
