Islamic State claims responsibility for Wednesday's triple attack in northern Afghanistan

MADRID, 26 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The jihadist group Islamic State has claimed this Thursday the authorship of the attacks perpetrated on Wednesday in the Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif, capital of the province of Balj (north), which resulted in the death of at least nine people and another 15 wounded, according to the official balance.

Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) has indicated in a statement that "soldiers of the caliphate" activated bombs on three buses in the city and added that the attacks resulted in the death of 30 "rafidis", a term used by jihadists to refer to the Shiites.

Mohamad Asif Naziri, a spokesman for the Balj provincial Security Department, said on Wednesday that the three bombs hit public transport, without giving further details, as reported by the Afghan news television network Tolo TV.

The attacks came shortly after at least five people were killed in an attack near the Hazarat Zarkaria mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul. While there is currently no claim of responsibility, ISKP has claimed similar attacks over the past few months.

ISKP, which considers the Taliban traitors to the orthodoxy of 'sharia' or Islamic law and defends a much harsher interpretation, has claimed several attacks in recent months, including several executed against mosques.
