The Spanish driver Isidre Esteve (Repsol Toyota Rally Team) achieved this Monday the best partial result of his career in a round of the World Rally-Raid Championship by finishing in sixth position in the second stage of the Morocco Rally.
The Catalan, along with his co-driver Txema Villalobos, shone in the 315 timed kilometers between Tan-Tan and El Ayoun with 315 timed kilometers, finishing 31 minutes and 16 seconds behind the winner, Frenchman Sebastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Extreme), and rising to eighth place overall and in the T1 category of cars.
"Getting this result is fantastic. We are very happy, because it is not easy with the level of drivers that are competing, but above all I prefer our rhythm. We are racing a lot, we are having fun and the car is going very well. And this is merit of the whole team, Repsol, MGS, KH-7, Toyota and all the people who have been supporting us for years", Esteve underlined in statements provided by his team.
The man from Oliana insisted that without his current car they could not be "so competitive", but he also gave credit to the mechanics who "have done an excellent job in the tests prior to the Morocco Rally, especially with the brakes". "And I must say that for the first time I have a car with which I brake where I want and when I want. It's going excellent," he stressed.
Esteve and Villalobos knew how to show their good coordination on a day where they enjoyed better visibility than on Sunday and in which the good navigation skills of the co-driver from Girona were key.
"It was a rather fast stage, but with a lot of navigation because there was a lot off track and it was difficult to find our way around. We didn't make any mistakes, except for a moment when an Audi passed us and we followed it thinking that it was going well, although quickly Txema has found the right track," warned Esteve.
The driver from Lleida remarked that they were right when "reaching the end, there were two difficult places" and that "the only downside" is that they punctured ten kilometers from the finish line and lost "part of the advantage" they had achieved.
