The Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, accompanied by the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, inaugurated this Monday the hydroelectric gigabattery in Tamega (Portugal), the main project of its kind in Europe, with an investment of more than 1,500 million euros .
With an execution period of eight years, this hydroelectric macro-complex is located a few kilometers from the border with Galicia and has generated a hiring of close to 20,000 jobs, also being an example of energy efficiency and circular economy.
The Alto Tamega hydroelectric complex is made up of three reservoirs and, thanks to its reversible pumping capacity, it is capable of storing energy so that it can be used when it is most needed.
At 12:45 p.m. (Spanish time), Galán and Costa will inaugurate what is considered to be the largest clean energy creation project in the history of Portugal.
The gigabattery involves the construction of three dams and three plants (Gouvaes, Daivoes and Alto Tamega) with a combined capacity of 1,158 megawatts (MW), which will mean a 6% increase in the total installed electrical power in the country.
The complex will be capable of producing 1,766 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, enough to meet the energy needs of neighboring municipalities and the cities of Braga and Guimaraes (440,000 homes). In addition, this large renewable infrastructure will have enough storage capacity to serve two million Portuguese households for an entire day.
The project is financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB). In July 2018, the entity gave Iberdrola 500 million euros, the first of the 650 million approved in total to finance this development.
The project also includes, in its Environmental Impact Statement (DIA), various compensation measures for ecological systems, such as the reforestation of more than 1,000 hectares, the planting of 17,000 cork oaks or actions to improve the populations of protected fauna existing in the environment.
In addition, the future construction of two wind farms linked to the gigabattery will be added to the project, which will turn the complex into a hybrid generation plant and whose final power is estimated to reach 300 MW, making it one of the largest wind projects in Portugal.
