Hungary manages to stop the EU from sanctioning Patriarch Kirill in exchange for unblocking the oil embargo

BRUSSELS, June 2 (EUROPE PRESS) -

Hungary has achieved this Thursday that the European sanctions for the Russian invasion of Ukraine do not include Patriarch Kirill, in exchange for unblocking the embargo on Russian oil, within the framework of the sixth package of measures that will not include the religious leader at the request of Hungary that threatened to stop formal approval.

In a meeting at the level of ambassadors, the EU has finally adopted this new round of sanctions in response to Budapest's demands not to include the highest representative of the Orthodox Church in Russia on the 'black list'.

The Patriarch is a figure considered close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and has been the subject of controversy since the invasion of Ukraine for not expressly condemning the offensive by the Russian Army.
