Hundreds of people protest in front of the Georgian Parliament ahead of the meeting between the prime minister and the opposition

MOSCOW, July 4 (DPA/EP) -

Hundreds of people have protested this Monday next to the Georgian Parliament in view of the meeting scheduled for this day between the prime minister, Irakli Garibashvili, and the opposition leaders, who demand the resignation of the Government.

The protesters have demanded an internal "road map" closer to Brussels in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, although they have guaranteed that they will protest peacefully. "We want to show Europe that we are prepared to be constructive until the end even though we are not disappointed by the actions of the authorities," said one of the organizers of the march.

The demonstrations also took place on Sunday, although it is the third time that hundreds of people have taken to the streets in recent weeks. Many consider that the Government is responsible for the fact that the European Commission has not granted the country the status of a candidate for accession to the community bloc, as they have done with Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine has led the Georgian population to demand greater European integration. However, the European Union (EU) considers that Georgia must implement numerous reforms, especially in the area of corruption and the protection of minorities, before gaining this status.
