Henrik Stenson fired with "immediate effect" as Europe captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup

MADRID, 20 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson has lost his status as captain of Europe for the 2023 edition of the Ryder Cup to be held in Rome with "immediate effect" due to his more than possible involvement in playing in the new Saudi circuit LVI Series.

Stenson, who was elected the new leader of the European team last March to replace the Irishman Padraig Harrington, has recently been linked to play the LVI Golf Invitational Series, something that the European Ryder Cup Committee has not liked, which has decided withdraw the captaincy.

Ryder Cup Europe confirms that Henrik Stenson's term as Team Europe Captain for Ryder Cup 2023 in Rome has ended with immediate effect.

The European team did not refer to the LVI Series and limited itself to commenting that given "the decisions made" by Stenson "it has become clear that he will not be able to fulfill certain contractual obligations to which he had committed" after being announced as captain "by which is not possible for him to continue in office".

The appearance of this new golf competition has attracted many players both from the European Circuit, such as the Spanish Sergio García, and from the United States Circuit, who have lost their status as members, so they will not be able to be chosen for the next team competition that will be held at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome from September 25 to October 1, 2023.
