Half of the drivers killed in 2021 had drunk alcohol or used other types of drugs

MADRID, 20 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

49.4 percent of drivers who died last year in Spain had consumed alcohol or other substances, according to data from the 2021 Memory of Toxicological Findings in Fatal Victims of Traffic Accidents, with alcohol being the most detected substance in corpses , followed by cocaine and cannabis.

Prepared by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences (INTCF), the Report obtains its results from the autopsies of 812 drivers who died in 2021 in traffic accidents, of which, the vast majority, 90.6% were men, and 9.4% women, with the age group between 45 and 54 being the most affected.

Of the 812 deceased, 401 tested positive, 49.5 percent, with alcohol as the most detected substance, in 69.8% of cases, followed by drugs (43.1%) and psychotropic drugs (23). .7%).

The Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, called during the presentation of the Report to "combat" the "belief" in some drivers that "they think they have control of themselves and their reflexes" after having drunk alcohol or taken any drug.

The general data represents a slight increase compared to 2020, when, of the 597 drivers who died in accidents, 48.7% (291) tested positive for alcohol, drugs of abuse and/or psychoactive drugs, and had already consumed them isolated or combined substances.
