The president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, declared this Monday a state of calamity in the Central American country due to the effects of the passage of storm 'Julia'.

"In the Council of Ministers we have decided to declare a state of calamity for 30 days to implement urgent measures to safeguard the lives of Guatemalans in the face of the scourge of cyclone 'Julia' in the country," Giammattei said in a publication on his Twitter account. the Twitter social network.

"It should be noted that the damage being caused by 'Julia' throughout Central America and, especially, in Guatemala, is copious," explained the president.

The country's leader has indicated that damage has already occurred in Guatemalan territory, despite the fact that more heavy rains are expected. "We have people buried, we already have seven affected bridges, damaged roads, people without electricity ..." Giammattei listed in a video posted on his networks.

"The greatest effects are going to occur in the course of today," he warned, before asking for precautions due to the high probability of serious flooding on the banks of the country's rivers.

The state of calamity allows, during the next 30 days, the Executive to implement urgent measures, among which direct purchases for the emergency stand out.
