German Police Launches Mission to Investigate Nord Stream Leaks

BERLIN, Oct. 10 (DPA/EP) -

The German Police and Army have deployed an investigation team to clarify the origin of the leaks from the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea two weeks after the explosions.

Police officers have confirmed to DPA this Sunday that the agents had been "deployed in the Baltic Sea, near the island of Bornholm, with the support of the navy and a Federal Police ship."

The four leaks, detected simultaneously at the end of September in the two gas pipelines intended to transport gas from Russia to Germany, caused massive environmental damage.

Currently participating in the investigation mission are a naval mine search vessel with soldiers and a vessel with civilians. Divers will take pictures of the damage to the pipes.

Police chief Dieter Romann last week submitted a request to the German armed forces "to obtain a picture of the situation regarding the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea."
