German inflation climbed to a record 10% in September

MADRID, 13 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The consumer price index (CPI) of Germany rebounded to 10% last September, compared to 7.9% registered in August, which represents the highest cost of living since the reunification of the country, according to It follows from the data published this Thursday by Destatis, the German statistical office.

"The inflation rate reached a new maximum of 10% in reunified Germany," said Georg Thiel, president of Destatis, for whom the main reasons for high inflation continue to be "the huge increases in prices of energy products."

Likewise, the expert warned that more and more price increases are being observed for many other goods, especially food, while the end of public support measures, such as the 9-euro transport ticket and the fuel discount, " increased the price increase in September 2022".

In this sense, Destatis calculates the cushioning effect of the relief measures on the consumer price index at around one percentage point, pointing out that their end in September was evident in the prices of regional and local public transport tickets, as well as in fuels.

The increase in transport prices compared to the same month last year was 14% in September 2022, after 3.7% in August. In May 2022, before the relief measures were applied, it was 16.3%.

On their side, the prices of energy products increased by 43.9% year-on-year, after rising 35.6% in August. Domestic energy increased 51.8%, including a 108.4% increase in heating oil and a 95.1% increase in the price of natural gas. Likewise, electricity prices increased by 21%.

In the case of food, prices increased by 18.7% in September compared to the same month of the previous year, after rising 16.6% in August. Price increases were observed in all food groups, including edible fats and oils (49%), as well as dairy products and eggs (29.1%), meat and meat products (19.5%) and bread and cereal products (18.5%).

In September, the inflation rate without including the impact of energy was 6%, while the core inflation rate, which also leaves food out of the calculation, was 4.6%.

On its side, the harmonized inflation rate for Germany, used by Eurostat in its statistics, stood at 10.9% in September, nine tenths above the general index.
