Formula 1 will have a 100% sustainable fuel in 2026

MADRID, 27 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Formula 1 has announced new measures for its 'Net Zero Carbon by 2030' initiative, meaning that the sport has a zero carbon footprint by 2030, including the development of a 100% sustainable fuel, the drastic reduction of single-use plastics and review of the logistics of travel and freight transport.

In 2019, the 'Grand Circus' agreed with the 10 World Championship teams, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), suppliers and other championship agents targets to reduce the sport's carbon footprint. Among them were the redesign of containers to lighten loads or the use of 100% renewable energy in the F1 offices; this same season, the organizers introduced E10 fuel, made up of 10% ethanol -which reduces CO2 emissions-.

Now Formula 1 is working with oil company Aramco and major fuel manufacturers to develop a 100% sustainable fuel that will be introduced to power units in 2026, when the new era of hybrid engines begins. It will be a replacement fuel, so called because it can be used in the same way in road cars as it is in normal internal combustion engines.

In addition, it is also planned to restructure the World Cup calendars to "improve cargo and travel logistics" and that the "Great Circus" move "more efficiently." "Carbon reduction measures for fans traveling to Formula 1 races are being investigated and more efficient travel will be studied," F1 said.
