Fernando Alonso: "Seventh is perhaps the first place we can fight for"

The Spanish driver Fernando Alonso (Alpine) has assured that "seventh" is perhaps the highest position he can aspire to in the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Saturday's qualifying session "is not a priority", and has stated that the goal is "to be six or seven consecutive races in the points".

"Maybe we were close -to the podium- in Australia. At the beginning of the year we will be more competitive than we are now. Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are too far away, we are not in a position on our own merits to be able to fight for the podium. Maybe seventh be the first position we can fight for", he declared at a press conference.

Even so, the Asturian is satisfied with the evolution of the car and with having been able to score points in recent races after failing to do so in previous tests due to "reliability problems, errors or bad luck". "In Barcelona and Monaco we finally got those good points. The goal is to be able to have six or seven consecutive races in the points," he stressed.

On the appointment in Baku, he explained that it is "a unique race in which many things can happen on Sunday". "Saturday is not a priority, maybe Sunday's pace is more and focus on any possibility that arises: safety cars or red flag," she said.

"We all want some action on Sunday. It's a single track, very low downforce for a street circuit. We are fully loaded to Singapore and Monaco, and here we come very lightly loaded. No mistakes to be made in 'qualy ' and in the race," he concluded.
