Fernando Alonso: "Keeping the rear wheels alive was the biggest challenge"

MADRID, 12 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish driver Fernando Alonso (Alpine) has assured that maintaining "the life" of his rear tires was "the biggest challenge" this Sunday at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, in which he finished seventh, and he was satisfied of having been able to take "good points" from the last races.

"We struggled a bit more with the tires than we expected. We had very little downforce, on the straight we were going very fast and that helped to keep position, but at the same time we wore out the tires a lot. Keeping the rear wheels alive was the biggest challenge today," he told DAZN.

Regarding the fight for seventh place with the McLarens of Australian Daniel Ricciardo and Briton Lando Norris in the final stretch of the race, the Asturian stated that it was "unlikely" that he would make a mistake. "We knew we had this extra speed. He knew they were expecting some failure, but he was trying to get the last two or three corners right, calmly," he said.

"I thought I could hold the position. We had a good start, a good strategy, a good pit stop, and when you do that in Baku you usually always gain some position because of the chaos ahead. We started 10th and finished 7th. We finished Barcelona, Monaco and Baku with good points, and now to continue in Canada," he concluded.
