Felipe González mourns the death of Gorbachev: "It changed the world"

MADRID, 31 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Former President Felipe González has expressed his shock at the news of the death of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union, with whom he had a close relationship between the 1980s and 1990s. In his opinion, it is "an extraordinary personality" who "changed the world", although since then the world has not found his balance.

In a video statement sent to Europa Press, González assures that the news of Gorbachev's death has hit him "like a storm" since he had an intense relationship with him since he took office as first secretary of the PCUS in 1985 until the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991, when he was already talking to him about a possible departure from power.

In those years he ended up establishing a "great friendship before and after" and in fact last spring he congratulated him on his ninetieth birthday.

In his opinion, he is "an extraordinary personality" who contributed to changing the world through 'Perestroika' and 'Glasnot'. "I am very sorry for his death --- he said--. Gorbachev changed the world, helped to overcome the balance of terror and the world still has not found a new balance."
