Feijóo says that abortion is not a "fundamental right" but endorses terminating the pregnancy in accordance with the law of deadlines

MADRID, 15 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has assured this Wednesday that abortion is not a "fundamental right" but has defended the right of women to terminate the pregnancy in accordance with the deadlines set in the current legislation after the endorsement of the law of the Constitutional Court.

"In our country, the last law in force has been in force for 13 years and neither the PP nor the PSOE have changed it," he assured after visiting the Ronald McDonald House, a free accommodation of the children's foundation that bears the same name and which houses to the families that come to the capital to have their children receive treatment in hospitals.

Feijóo has indicated that if they ask him if abortion is a fundamental right, he says that it is not "recognized" in the Human Rights Convention. "And abortion is the right that a woman has according to the legislation of her country", he has added.

The controversy over abortion has been open for several days after Feijóo's public support for the system of deadlines after learning of the decision of the Constitutional Court endorsing the law approved by the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in 2010 and that the PP appealed to the court of guarantee.

This Tuesday, he referred to his appearance before the media that he would make today to answer this question and different PP spokesmen avoided the issue, assuring that in the party there are "many sensitivities" and that "all opinions" on the abortion law fit. .

Abortion has always caused debate in the ranks of the PP and this was seen in the XVIII Congress that the formation held in 2017, to which numerous amendments were presented. In the end, the social paper was approved in that conclave in these terms: "The PP is firmly committed to the defense and protection of the right to life. That is why we consider that abortion should not be understood as a right but as a failure of the society".
