Erdogan warns before his meeting with Sweden and Finland that he will not accept "empty words"

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has warned that Sweden and Finland must adopt "concrete" measures and not rely on "empty words" to resolve Turkish suspicions and advance their accession to NATO, hours before a key meeting in Madrid.

Erdogan is scheduled to meet this Tuesday with the President of Finland, Sauli Niinisto, and the Prime Minister of Sweden, Magdalena Andersson, from whom he will presumably demand some kind of gesture related to the fight against terrorism.

In this sense, he pointed out that the two Nordic countries must take into account the complaints of Turkey, which recriminates the Swedes and Finns for their alleged collusion with organizations such as the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Popular Protection Units (YPG). ).

"Integration into NATO implies responsibilities," said the Turkish president, in a statement to the media in Ankara reported by the official Anatolia news agency.

Erdogan has also announced that he will take advantage of his trip to Madrid for the NATO summit to meet with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, who has unequivocally supported the entry of Sweden and Finland into the Atlantic Alliance.

Both presidents have spoken this Tuesday by telephone and have agreed to meet on the margins of the summit, although Erdogan has explained that it is not yet known whether this meeting will take place this Tuesday or already on Wednesday.

The White House has also confirmed in a statement Biden's willingness to meet with Erdogan within the framework of the summit, which will serve to "discuss the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine for transatlantic security and other threats to the Alliance, such as The terrorism".
