Erdogan calls for "concrete steps" to accept Finland and Sweden into NATO

MADRID, 23 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has warned that in order to reverse his current rejection of the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO, declarations alone are not enough, but "concrete steps" are required to guarantee Turkish national security.

"We believe that an enlargement policy that ignores fundamental security concerns will not benefit us or NATO," he stressed, during a military act reported by the Anatolia news agency.

Turkey criticizes the Nordic countries for the limits imposed on the sale of weapons due to the military offensive launched in Syria, as well as the alleged permissiveness towards "terrorist" organizations such as the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) or the Popular Protection Units ( YPG).

This mistrust has resulted in a slowdown in the ambitious Finnish and Swedish companies, who aspire to an express entry into the Atlantic Alliance to mitigate potential threats from Russia as soon as possible. Both countries have already formally requested accession, but the Atlantic Council has not been able to agree on the opening of negotiations.
