ERC says sedition reform is "a big step forward" and will continue with self-determination as goal

MADRID, 10 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Esquerra Republicana (ERC) has assessed "very positively" the reform of the crime of sedition of the Penal Code announced by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, this Thursday and has indicated that it is "a great step forward" and "essential" to put an end to what they consider "conflict" between Spain and the Government of Catalonia.

As reported by sources from the formation chaired by Oriol Junqueras, the sedition reform "would not have been possible without political negotiation between the two governments" and they have defended the ERC's commitment to "the negotiated route" to put an end to "the repression ".

In this context, from ERC they have reiterated that amnesty and self-determination are the "political objective" of the party, as they have always defended, and that they will continue "working on it" to achieve it.

For his part, Junqueras celebrated on Twitter that "advancing in dejudicialization is always positive, because it brings justice where there is injustice." "That is why we Republicans celebrate the elimination of sedition. And we will continue to work on the path of political negotiation to achieve amnesty and self-determination," he pointed out.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Thursday that PSOE and United We Can present a legislative initiative in Congress tomorrow to reform the crime of sedition, which will be called "aggravated public disorder".

This has been stated in an interview in La Sexta, collected by Europa Press, in which he has indicated that the new criminal type will be "more or less comparable" with other European democracies such as Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland and the penalties for these crimes will be those that govern the criminal codes of those countries.
