ERC asks for financial support from the State to organize world championships in Canoeing and Athletics in Catalonia

Esquerra Republicana has registered an initiative in Congress asking the Government for economic and institutional support from the State to organize in 2027 in Catalonia both the Canoeing World Cup and the Athletics World Championship, venues that will be decided this year 2023.

In the non-legal proposal, which will be voted on by the Congressional Committee on Culture and Sports, the pro-independence formation specifically demands that the Government commit to "financially support" the "possible candidacies" of the municipalities of La Seu and Sort (Lleida) for the 2027 Canoeing World Cup and the city of Barcelona to organize the world athletics championship that year.

To this end, they demand that an agreement be signed between the Generalitat, the affected municipalities and the General State Administration to "finance the necessary investments in the territory to guarantee the success of said candidacies", and demand that the Government guarantee "100 % of the budgetary execution of the investments destined to these territories", such as the one included in the 2023 Budgets for the N-260.

As explained in the initiative, collected by Europa Press, in this year of 2023 the processes for choosing the venues for these competitions will be developed and the Catalan municipalities have already begun to prepare their candidacies, but ERC assumes that "it is evident that the City councils alone cannot afford all the investments necessary to guarantee that these candidacies are successful".

"The commitment of all administrations is necessary, including that of the General State Administration, to carry out these projects without mortgaging local administrations, which unfortunately have too little room for action," he says. .

In addition, Esquerra recalls that the municipalities of La Seu d'Urgell and Sort already organized a world canoeing competition in 2019 and that they have yet to receive 150,000 euros in aid committed for that event, for which they also demand the Government to pay them "within a period not exceeding thirty days from the approval" of the initiative.
