England completes an impeccable first phase and waits for Spain

Austria beat Norway to reach the quarterfinals

MADRID, 15 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The England team has signed a new win against Northern Ireland (0-5) in the third game of the group stage of the Women's Euro Cup played in their country, sending a serious warning to a Spain with which they could face each other in the quarterfinals, while in the other duel of Group A Austria qualified for the knockout rounds after beating Norway by the minimum (1-0).

In the duel at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton, the hosts, who were already classified as first in the group, again showed signs of their punch in a match in which, however, they had to wait until the 41st minute to pierce the Northern Ireland goal, with a shot by Fran Kirby from the edge of the box.

Before the break, Beth Mead increased the rent for those of Sarina Wiegman -absent due to coronavirus- and joined Jodie Taylor (5) and Ellen White (6) as one of the only English players to score five or more goals in a European Championship or a World Cup.

As soon as the match resumed, Alessia Russo scored the third (min. 48) and five minutes later she raised the stadium with a wonderful play at the half turn to make it 4-0. An own goal by Kelsie Barrows completed the hand of the 'Lionesses', who, with a goal balance of 14-0, are already waiting for the winner of Spain-Denmark on the last day of Group B in the quarterfinals.

For their part, Austria sealed their ticket to the qualifiers - where they will face Germany, against whom they will seek to emulate the semifinals of their debut in 2017 - after beating Norway, continental champions in 1987 and 1993, with a solitary goal by Nicole Billa.

The Hoffenheim striker was a real nightmare for the Scandinavian defense and found a prize after half an hour, in an action in which she took advantage of a measured center by Hanshaw to head into the back of the rival goal net (min. 37).
