Endesa will build a new building for the group's central laboratory in As Pontes, in which it will invest 2.7 million euros, which "will remain in the town and not far from its current location". With this new building, you will be able to separate the analytical part from the rest of the dependencies and consider that the storage of chemical products will be improved.

As indicated by the company in a statement, once the company has the municipal license that it has already requested, the work will be carried out, which is expected to last about nine months.

This laboratory, created in 2008, was born linked to thermal activity, and is based in the coal plant that is in the process of being closed. Now, they point out, "with the irruption of renewable energies", they have changed the orientation of the tasks, so that it currently operates "with all technologies", which implies that it carries out studies "for gas and coal power plants as well as for nuclear, solar, geothermal, hydro and wind".

Likewise, the company has explained that all those Enel group plants that encounter "an unusual event for which it is not easy to explain" turn to the central laboratory. In this sense, he has given as an example the case of "screws that break a few days after the commissioning of a wind turbine, the appearance of foreign substances in the blades of a turbine or the birth of tubers inside a hydraulic pipe ".

The team of laboratory researchers -- made up of 18 highly qualified professionals -- receives samples of the anomalous pieces and subjects them to various studies until they find the cause of the incident. In any case, they add, these are always "relevant and complex" cases.

In addition, this unit provides technical support to the plants in the analysis of water, soil, fuel, oil, fat, limestone, fiber, metal components, plastics and other types of polymers.

The objective, they indicate, is to find out the causes of unexpected events, technically support claims for deficiencies, analyze possible investments, develop environmental projects and optimize operating expenses in chemical processes.

On the other hand, it should be noted that their services are in demand by any Enel group plant. For this reason, 45% of its work corresponds to requests from outside of Spain. Specifically, the company has confirmed, most of the jobs of foreign origin come from Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Italy.
