Ecuador will begin its first census of prisoners in prisons on Monday

MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

On Monday, the Ecuadorian authorities will begin the first census of prisoners in the country's prisons, in fulfillment of one of the promises made by the government of Guillermo Lasso to try to contain the violence that regularly leaves dozens dead.

Two teams from the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Prisoners of Liberty (SNAI) will tour the 36 penitentiary centers to collect data from all inmates. They plan to complete the work within three months, according to a statement from the institution.

The census aims to "improve living conditions" for prisoners and achieve "better administration" of Ecuadorian prisons. For the Government, "it is essential to have reliable and accurate statistical information on persons deprived of liberty, with the aim of promoting the creation of public policies and the execution of strategies that generate better and greater opportunities for rehabilitation and social reintegration in Ecuador".

The Executive presented in February its plan to improve the penitentiary system, after several massacres. The authorities estimate that more than 400 prisoners have died in violent incidents since 2020, which has also led to criticism from organizations such as the UN.
